Jim, this is probably similar to AMLCD displays developed by Kopin for DARPA:
web-ext2.darpa.mil

See 8/97 Program Status: ...These designs are based on the 24 micron pixel 1280x1024 displays delivered earlier, the fabrication and evaluation of test pixel array designs, and the results of a parallel add-on technology enhancement contract. The technology enhancement project developments were a tri-band primary color lamp, an integrated color filter process, assembly techniques for small pixel displays and a 1280x1024, 12 micron pixel display. This shrink version of the 24 micron pixel display was the first 12 micron pixel display demonstrated.

The 1280x1024 display with 24 micron pixels (1000 DPI) has a diagonal dimension of 1.5", so .77" would be about right for 12 micron pixels (2000 DPI).
