Personally I hope Java puts a serious dent in MSFT's earnings. MSFT's 'systems' have been anything but open! I have tried to write code using the COMs interface. It's terrible -- engineered for one purpose -- keep people out.

Give me a break, the COM model looks like C++ from a developers perspective. If you write it in C++ it is not that bad. Sure some of the OLE interfaces are a bit cumbersom, but it appears that Microsoft is committed to making this work for developers. I ask honestly of you - have your experiences with CORBA or OpenDoc been better? I all felt about the same when your objects get some real complexity in them. Plus I can't think of any OS vendor that provides as much information to developers as Microsoft. If you talk with even Microsoft's critics they will admit one area that Microsoft is gung ho about was getting developers writing apps for Windows.

I cant do better than Larry's answer.
I dont think markets are "free". Government should give no subsidies to anyone and sue no one. Only individuals and companies should sue other individuals or companies.
Yes I do think "free" markets would mean wonderful competition: along with elimination of regulations, etc etc etc so that james in his garage could come up with great ideas and market them without his nosy neighbor calling the zoning police before james' idea gets going.
