Suppose you had a drug that cured 25% of a population of otherwise terminal patients while having really bad side effects for the other 75%. What do you do?

If you were in a similar situation with diabetes - which is generally not terminal - then the answer probably changes.

I believe side effects of a lot of currently approved cancer drugs are quite severe too. Hair loss, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, sterility,...... Yet they are used because its all we've got.

I'm having a really hard time deciding what data from cancer trials means. It's hard to attach much meaning to statistics given the often small numbers involved. Also, the selection criteria for the trial tend to cause a bias against success. Add to that reports of side effects of various kinds which may seem severe but pale when you consider the obvious side effect of non-treatment...

<IMHO Henry never validated the accuracy of the H&Q numbers, he just quoted that this was indeed their estimate. And, I think it was indeed their estimate, and few of us, including Henry, thought this was the most accurate est.>

It's interesting that you do not say why you believed this was the most accurate estimate. Probally because Henry told you it was.
