Looks like amat expects a healthy recovery in the SE Asian region -- from that same article:

...But despite the Asian crisis, the company expected revenues in southeast Asia to rise to $180 million in 1998 from $140 million in the previous year, Wang said.

Ng Khim Han, managing director of Applied Materials Southeast Asia, said sales from the region could potentially reach $400 million three years from now, depending on how fast economies like Malaysia and Thailand recovered.

It's just a matter of time...

FWIW (and it certainly isn't much), if amat hadn't become such a darling of wall street, it would have been whacked after reporting lukewarm revenue growth and earnings along with a murky intermediate-term future. Though the downside has been tempered by its status as a giant in the industry, the ensuing recovery will probably yield a less robust stock price recovery once the revenue growth returns. Looking for a double over three years, and better only if there is a nice jtechkid-type pullback in price over the summer. Unfortunately for those of us on the sidelines patiently waiting, amat in the 20s is as likely as clinton discovering honesty. amat in the low 30s is a possibility (in my dreams). Wish I could develop short term trading skills in the meantime...
