Off topic - does that V2000 compete with ETEC's leading edge products
or trailing edge. Since ETEC gets most of its "growth" from price increases and not unit increases, if someone came along with a really competitive product, ETEC could have a problem.

Ian... IF EUV ever amounts to more than a concept, UTEK might have something...:http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/980506/usal_1.html
It just might be a while before this pans out, however. Tests using "conventional" DUV below .1u have already been conducted..and likely would carry industry needs for the next 10-12 years...
Knowing nothing else about UTEK, it would be interesting to know if ETEC has any serious competition (or even the potential).. TSO

Ian or anyone,

ETEC is a great company, but they seem to be a bottleneck on the DUV industry. I heard Brinker's estimates for '99 shipments of Ultrabeam from a friend, but do you think they are realistic(6-10 I think)? If they are, UTEK looks good as does ETEC, because there seems to be a dearth of e-beam mask making tools.

Any enlightenment on this topic would be appreciated,

Bob

You are 100% correct, of course. My failure to remember that UTEK does have a mask writing tool may be an indicator of the uphill battle they face... The Lepton/Ultrabeam tool is a vector writer, while the ETEC tools are raster scanners. Both sides argue that their approach is faster, but there's so little market experience with the Ultrabeam system that it's hard to say for sure. All the photomask companies are likely to be making big capacity buys in the next few years, so even a small slice of the market could be quite profitable for UTEK.

And yes, UTEK does dominate the disk drive head market, though ASML (with the new Special Applications unit) and Nikon are both fighting for that niche, too. Not to mention all the laser and FIB non-lithographic head trimming tools out there. Since the thread was about wafers, I think I brain-locked on that market. Sigh...
