You'reright. Their action to keep using MIPS processor three years ago spoke volumes for SGI then. I predict that Cray will be sold and SGI will begin to look for a bidder.

You are arguing tactically when this discussion
is strategic. The point being made here is that
SGI bought Cray for the wrong reasons.

Technical computing was not a market with any serious
growth. Cray was not a fabulously healthy company.
They had a bunch of unrelated, confusing and divergent
products. SGI was winning in the technical market
without buying Cray. Finally, SGI ignored the
computing market where the most money was because their
butthead CEO didn't think commercial computing was cool.

Over the past 3 years the computer market has grown
enormously and SGI has shrunk, due in large part to
the stupid policies and directions set by senior mgmt,
of which buying Cray was a symptom.

And I know exactly how much Cray contributed to the
Origin line as I worked in System Software at SGI
during the time the Origin was developed.
