Dwight, I will interject a (really meant to be non-inflamatory) fact.

When I ordered my computer from Micron 1 1/2 years ago, the marginal cost of Office Pro 95, over Works, was $40-50. I'm sure it wasn't more. There were the usual tricks, where the bundles actually came in 2 different "models", but this was comparing identically configured systems, except for Office vs. Works. It was also at a time where the Office 97 upgrade was free.

Microsoft's OEM dealings are a key strength, and it will be very interesting to see what gets negotiated there. It will also be very interesting to see if it makes any difference. The OEMs will need some real cover before they try to stand up to Bill again, given the outcome of the sacred icon war. Compaq could stand up to notoriously ruthless and vindictive Intel, ushering in the era of cheap PCs, but they were defenseless against Microsoft.

Cheers, Dan.
