If Pakistan willy-nilly accepts India as a big-brother (it is logical because India never initiated a war) and declares to not develop/test nuclear arms, and (in return) India announces that she would never attack (this is credible), both India and Pakistan resolve their differences over Kashmir (after all they were all Indians before 1947), and both agree to promote bilateral trade, establish all links and work towards removal of mutual distrust; then the western powers will be at a great loss. This is because, their plan to establish a Pakistan to contain Indian hegemony will ultimately fail. Both India and Pakistan will become very prosperous and China will have reasons to worry about continuing to occupy Tibet and to extend her territorial ambitions. The basic problem with the "if" is that Pakistani generals continue to harbor enmity towards India due to their ignominious defeat in the Bangladesh war. Furthermore, Pakistanis have been given the feeling (especially by the US) that they are a military match against India. Most well-placed Americans truly believe the unbelievable, namely, the Pakistani parity. That is why the US is pursuing the futile policy of establishing a parity by supplying to Pakistan F16's that can carry nuclear weapons. The WILD WEST cannot fathom that a "destitute" India could/should/would have the capability/ingenuity to protect herself and to develop on her own. They are beset with the question of how India should be allowed to be stronger than the country they carved out of India and supported through and through. Amazing!!
