Of course he's under the gun.

His job is to generate commissions for MLs retail brokerage sales force. He seems to do that regularly.

His comments have nothing to do with long-term investment. ML doesn't want long term investors who generate zero commissions.

I've "road tested" this theory with the various cold-callers I get. I describe (somewhat inaccurately) my investment styles as being "buy only stocks you want to hold for 10 years, and don't sell them unless something changes drastically." It's amazing how quickly these shysters start back-pedaling out of the deal as soon as I say something like that. They want stupid doctors and lawyers with no clue, who'll believe the broker is doing a great job by trading in and out continuously for a couple of bucks each time.
