Broderbund Will Release Riven On DVD-ROM

By Aaron Ricadela, Computer Retail Week
Broderbund Software plans to release Riven: The Sequel to Myst on DVD-ROM this summer, giving retailers a potential "killer app" to drive sales of the emerging technology.

This week, Broderbund Software said it will ship a DVD-ROM version of Riven in August. The publisher plans to show the title behind closed doors at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Atlanta this month. Riven, the sequel to one of the most successful computer games ever, has sold more than 1 million copies on CD-ROM since its release in October.

"We're hoping to release the definitive DVD-ROM [game] with Riven, just as Myst was the definitive entertainment experience on CD-ROM," said Ken Goldstein, general manager of Broderbund's Red Orb Entertainment division.

The DVD-ROM Riven will contain all of the existing game's content, which spans five CD-ROMs, on a single disc. It will also feature enhanced graphics and sound, and include a "Making of Riven" documentary video that users can play on DVD-ROM drives or DVD movie players, Goldstein said.
