I agree. A lot of sane people in India and Pakistan agree. I am indifferent to even Pakistan taking over India as long as the governments are guaranteed to be democratic and the institutions are corruption free. This was Mahatma Gandhi's view too. He was ready to give the power to Jinnah and not have a Pakistan carved out of India.

I think Indian Rams and Pakistani Mohammeds are quite identical in their aspirations and philosophy. After all, they were all Hindus. Pakistanis like Indians do not like to be identified with the Arab world, except when it is absolutely necessary. They like to remain identified with the West like Indians. They are like a twin of India. It is a different matter that the politicians pander to the passions of Muslims and Hindus in these countries to attain their goals. In this sense, I like Bajpayee saying (to Indian Muslims): If you have to fear, fear only the God. [Darna He To Sirif Khudase Daro.]

Mohan,

The only "problem" is that the Kashmiris might (will?) choose to be independent from both Pakistan and India. There is not a lot of love lost between the average Kashmiri and Pakistan. So what happens then? How will the two smartened up "idiots" deal with that?

My last visit to Kashmir was just before the recent troubles in 1989. It is such a beautiful place and Kashmiris are such a wonderful people. What has happened to them is a tragedy.
