<<The Irish live better and live longer than most Americans. Perhaps their diet isn't so bad (less packaged foods) or perhaps it's because they don't have to contend with the high-stress nonsense of "political correctness" which reminds me of the old "moral majority" both of which are false precepts.>> Terrence, I am not sure where you got your information, but the Irish do not live longer or better than Americans. The life expectancy for white Americans (it is significantly lower for blacks) is currently 73.8 years for men, and 79.6 years for women. In Ireland, it is 73.2 years for men, and 78.5 years for women. The Irish life expectancy for men has not improved since 1926. Not only that, but according to a recent Irish Times report, Irish elderly are the least healthy, and have the lowest life expectancy, of all European Economic Community members. Half of them have a significant health problem, and a quarter of them have serious psychological problems. I could not find it when I searched the net, but have read in the past that the Irish have the highest rates of cancer, heart disease, and mental illness in all of Europe. The typical Irish diet is just loaded with meat and animal fat, alcohol, and cigarettes. There is still a lot of anger from events that happened hundreds of years ago, and in my opinion, at least, Catholicism has added to levels of fear, repression and domestic abuse, all of which are not very healthy.irish-times.com The facts and statistics in your post are all totally inaccurate, and throwing in political correctness and the moral majority in this context is illogical, and has nothing whatsoever to do with Irish life expectancy. Nor do they make the point you must have been hoping to make about what you perceive to be my overemphasis on political correctness. I like to at least try to start with facts, or scientific evidence, and then decide what I think about issues. That is why sometimes I may seem conservative in one area, but liberal or moderate or libertarian in another. You have an overriding political philosophy, and seem at least to want to make reality fit that, but I don't believe it always does very well.
