Richard...As the c|Net article points out, Apple is melding *the best* of the wintel world into the Mac. The results (AAPL decrease mfg costs & Customer Satisfaction) are summed up in their article: <Apple Computer is swallowing its pride and adopting technologies developed in the Windows-Intel world as it strives to lower manufacturing costs and offer customers a wider array of hardware options in upcoming systems> <Importantly, Mac customers are winners in all of this. A much wider array of hardware options become available at a lower cost that was previously possible with non-standard interconnect technologies> Cheers, Dennis source: <http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,22171,00.html?st.ne.fd.gif.b>

AAPL's uses industry device standards - conversion sales easier

AAPL can provide a superior PowerPC box with the OS and the former Winteller can keep his USB , PCI and AGP peripherals . AAPL's advantage is Rhapsody permits the quick writing of device drivers .

Solves the problem with the Universal Serial Bus (USB) which is writing the device drivers for each peripheral's specs to match each desktop's USB , plus a network desktop USB driver must match the server's .

AAPL has been gravitating toward peripheral standardization since adding PCI slots . Potential system customers do not like throwing away peripheral devices which currently work .

Great news for competitive marketing to large accounts .

Ideally the Mac's keyboard/mouse will port standardized and keep any unique features in its OS .
