JETS WILL PAY $1 MILLION ADVANCE TO O'DONNELL

(AP) - Neil O'Donnell's days as a New York Jets quarterback might
not be ending after all. The team was to pay O'Donnell another $1
million Friday as part of an advance on his $4.25 million salary
for the upcoming season. The payment was scheduled for May 15 as
part of his original $25 million deal. Leigh Steinberg,
O'Donnell's agent, said the team told him Thursday it would make
the payment. "To date, that brings the total to $3.75 million in
salary advance," Steinberg said. "However, that's all refundable
if he's not back with the team." Jets coach Bill Parcells has
made it clear he prefers Glenn Foley as the starter this season.
He has attempted to get O'Donnell to take a pay cut to keep the
team under the salary cap. Parcells also told O'Donnell not to
participate in the Jets' offseason conditioning program, fearing
an injury to the quarterback that could stymie the team in
freeing up money.

The starter the last two years after joining the Jets as a free
agent from Pittsburgh, O'Donnell refused a $2 million salary
reduction earlier this offseason. He could have earned back some
of the money through performance bonuses and incentives. "Bill
Parcells has never wavered from saying he wanted Neil back,"
Steinberg said. "He never wavered from his view that he thought
Neil was overpriced. Pretty soon here, we're going to have to see
Neil back practicing with the team." If the Jets release
O'Donnell, they aren't likely to do so before June 1. After that
date, they would be responsible for only $2.4 million of his
salary on this year's cap.
