Mohan:
I read an op-ed article by Ved Mehta in NYTimes. It was interesting and had a lot of important information. Title:India's combustible mixture
nytimes.com

There are some excerpts, I want to address:
I agree with all of his arguments except the following.
Bharatiya Janata Party, the Hindu First Party: Then how come that our FIRST SOLDIER is a Christian, George Fernadez?
Oppress Muslim Minority How Come that India trusted a Muslim to design rockets for our defence?
India has now a sense of greatness - illusory though it may be
This is a ref to nuclear testing. India had a glorious past. Present, and future show a lot of promise. Nuclear testing does not by itself confer greatness.
Majority of Indians are illiterate .....does not have ..a lavatory
IT is not uncommon for the educated elite to confuse literacy with intelligence. Don't equate literacy with intelligence. Literacy is good to have but not absolutely necessary for information processing. The ordinary Indian villager is intelligent and well-informed. Literacy is only part of the equation when its thrust is information and information-processing, which the ordinary villager has plenty of.
80% of the population does not have ..a lavatory:
Why an ordinary Indian villager in his right mind wants to defecate into and defile a shiny white toilet. He would rather defecate in the open fields and use the running streams for posterior ablution and use the toilet for storage of his precious jewelry. An ordinary Indian in his right mind does not defile and destroy that which looks nice and shiny. This toilet thing is a western habit, transplanted to India. This argument is half in jest. ;.)
The Chinese are preoccupied with their own problems to be interested in taking on India's: Tell that to Tibetans. With their enormous population and future increase in needs of resources, they have to find newer pastures to settle the Chinese. See what is happening in Tibet.
Border disputes and incursions go on between the two countries, but they have no nuclear dimension
Incursion by definition is invasion in its embryonic form. Why are the Chinese nuclear missiles targeted to Delhi?

Mohan,

It's not quite that easy. If the Kashmiris vote for complete independence, China, India, and Pakistan, would have a new national entity on their borders and their would be a new round of nasty business to influence independent Kashmir. Can you imagine a bunch of pro-Chinese puppets running the Kashmiri nation? That would be disastrous. On the hand, it might be like the Kashmiris winning the lottery. Everyone would be trying to help them.

This does not mean that I oppose a referendum in Kashmir. I just want to make sure that we think it all the way through.
