Motorola sale fails, plant to close

Citing a lack of cohesion on the part of the buyers,
Motorola announced that the previously-announced
sale of its Transmission Products Division to
international investors Cpath, Inc. will not be
completed. The Transmission Products Group
manufacturers Motorola's line of consumer analog and
ISDN modems. With no buyer, Motorola will close its
Huntsville, Alabama manufacturing facility. The
announcement states that the company will meet
"existing commitments regarding warranties and
customer programs." In announcing the sale
agreement late last month, Motorola stated they would
still provide technical support and V.90 upgrades for
existing modems. (Thanks to Alex P. Madarsz for the
scoop.)

of a takeover at communications giant Motorola.

Transend will release the 112K Gemini bonding
modem in July, according to Doug Olenick of
Computer Retail Week. Transend claims to use a
slightly different approach to bonding that it believes
will result in better performance, but ISPs must make
software changes on their end to fully utilize the
technology.

Todd Wasserman of Computer Retail Week reports
that 3Com has depleted most of the inventory of x2
products in the channel. In some cases, 3Com
reclaimed x2 products from the channel and upgraded
them to V.90.
