At least in Engineering, I refer to data as both.

jbe's post is correct. Datum is singular; the plural form is "data". If I tell you the CPI is x%, that is a datum. If I give you a list of numbers referring to the CPI, those are data.

I am actually less tolerant than jbe (Sorry, Tim) in that I hate to hear these latin plurals misused. The worst one in current misuse is "media". Television is a news medium. The press is a medium. Together they are the news media. You may not say "The media is..." and still be correct grammatically. This will probably change since the misuse is so widespread.
