Stockman - re: "Any company with Bay's product portfolio, installed base (telcos) and deep pockets, and drive, can easily topple Cisco. How much is that worth (cisco market cap of 76 billion?)" Just about couldn't believe that anyone that understands anything about the networking industry could post this. First, you seem to think that Cisco's product line are both inferior and more narrow in scope. If Cisco products are so inferior, why do they keep getting bought at record levels? IT organizations aren't stupid ... they do not invest in products/service/support that do not work. (please, please don't offer up the same tired ATT point. You don't hear about major WAN outages caused by Bay because Bay doesn't have the product portfolio to even play in that market) Bay will never come close to Cisco because the company is purely box oriented. Bay doesn't get it. Cisco delivers quality products with world class customer service and support. Cisco seems to understand the customer's need to invest in reliable, integrated solutions that are tried and tested. Cisco has built more large-scale data networks than probably all other traditional competitors combined. Bay decided to declare that "everything is IP/Adaptive Networking" (yeah -- that's original - and at the same time not very realistic in a Fortune 100 company) and hung its entire marketing hat on L3 switching -- a technology that has yet to reach major market status. There's a big reason why customers haven't actually bought and deployed all of those free giveaway Accelar switches in production networks. And contrary to what you wish, it's not because of Cisco FUD. And deep pockets? Just try comparing Bay's pockets to Cisco's. Marketing clout? Sales forces? You know the answers to these comparisons. Anyone who thinks Bay or 3Com or anyone other traditional data networking vendors can "easily topple" Cisco has an extreme misunderstanding of the market and its dynamics -- in my opinion, of course. Geez Stockman -- what the heck did you buy Bay at? Between all of your Cisco bashing on the Cisco thread and wishful thinking/hoping praying for magic Bay market cap increases, makes me think you bought at the WRONG time. Take your losses and write it off next April.
