Following up on SFE and CMGI: I'd be interested in hearing if there is a thread out there that is devoted to any and all companies that follow a CMG-style investment model in Internet stocks. There seem to be a growing number of such quasi-closed-end funds that have a narrow focus and potentially hidden value before they're "discovered." They run the gamut from penny stock Comtech Consolidation Group with its recent dabbling in Internet security firms (CCGI) to giants like the ventures arm of TCI. Neither of these is a pure-play Internet venture-style investment opportunity like CMGI. I bet there will be other CMG's out there in the future, however, which, like CMGI, don't start out as venture companies. I'd like to find them first! If there is no such thread, is there enough interest to start one?

SFE is an excellent thread. IT has very bright and dedicated investors and discussions are intellectually challenging. SFE delivered 5 year IRR of <70% and 10 year IRR of <32%. After the votes were counted, Musser said " with these kinds of results we did not think you will fire us".

I do not think a thread like the one suggests may draw significant contributors. Enterprises like CCGI may be mentioned on other threads like CMGI,SFE,etc and further discussion can be carried on company specific thread.

SFE is more diversified and less risky. SFE has started an Internet Venture fund as well. CMGI is pure play in internet. IMHO, Consumer oriented firms will not make a killing initially from e-commerce but business to business service firms will see immediate bottom line. CMGI is very well placed in taking advantage of this sector of internet.

Long CMGI and SFE for long time.
