Bill. Indonesia's debt problem is largely private debt. A lot of it linked to the Suharto family so we are not really talking about 3rd world loans in the traditional sense.

Suharto is not the monster that Hussein is but not too far away. Consider the invasion of East Timor in 1975 and the present government induced famine there and in West Papua. The expression of power in Indonesia is much more subtle but just as effective.

The military is the key to power in Indonesia. Suharto took power from Sukarno with a coup 30 years ago and the scenario that led to that coup (riots, attacks on ethnic Chinese) are here again today.

Wednesday there will be a mass rally in Jakarta. They are expecting one million in the streets. Interesting times.
