I think the perk in the POG is due largely to Asians buying gold. Many of them are seeking a safe haven for their money in gold because of rather unsettled conditions in Asia in general and in Indonesia in particular.

I think the nuclear-testing in India and the perception that the Pakistanis will soon show off they too have nuke capability have contributed towards increased buying of gold in Asia.

However, I think too much fuss has been made of the nuke tests. The Indian ruling party just wanted to divert the attention of the masses
away from the social problems at home and to rouse up rah-rah support.

BTW, one Sollog, aka Nostradamus of the 90's, who has made a number of spot-on accurate predictions before, predicts that the USA will cease to be a nation after 2001. If he is right, all the hard work of most of the investors/speculators to get rich will be for naught. I hope he is wrong, at least for once, where this doomsday prediction is concerned.
