Actually, I think it would do the opposite. Someone abusing the purpose of a thread would be more apt to reply, "If you don't like it, use the filter" instead of taking their messages elsewhere. It would dilute efforts to keep threads on topic.

I'm saying that, for the most part, I like SI the way it is today. I'm concerned that filtering would change the character of SI in a negative way. I'm also saying that civilized debate and contrary opinions are good things to encourage.

Profane posts and others which violate the terms of use can and are dealt with today by the Admin. I wouldn't object if SI built an automatic filter for 4-letter vulgarities.
