Someone (maybe it was me) asked on this thread what NCR was doing in the smart card arena. Here is some recent news. For Release On May 5, 1998 NCR joins Visa International's Visa Smart Initiative DAYTON, OH - NCR Corporation, one of the world's leading suppliers to the retail financial services industry, has signed a letter of intent to join Visa International's Visa Smart initiative as part of NCR's commitment to the fast-growing smart-card sector. Visa Smart brings together NCR with other leading suppliers and a comprehensive group of providers of chip-based products and services to help Visa's member banks around the banks launch smart card programs quickly and cost-effectively. The alliance with Visa, announced at this week's CardTech '98 show in Washington DC, further establishes NCR as a leading player in the area of smart cards - chip-enabled bank cards that can store electronic cash. The cards can be used to upload cash from a variety of access points such as automated teller machines (ATMs) and telephones. This electronic cash can then be used instead of small change to buy goods and services ranging from food to transport tickets and many other items. NCR is already working with many banks around the world on their smart-card solutions both by upgrading ATMs to take the new cards and by integrating the transactions that flow from the cards into banks' payments systems. "We're firm believers in the potential of smart cards and we're proud to be part of the Visa Smart program," said Peta Matthews, NCR's director of smart card programs. "Over the next few years we'll see many new smart-card applications that will both excite consumers and offer new opportunities for banks." About Visa Visa is the largest consumer payment system worldwide with more volume than all other major payment cards combined and has 21,000 member financial institutions. Visa has more than 70 smart card programs in 30 countries and on the Internet, with 22 million Visa chip cards, including 8 million Visa Cash cards. Visa is pioneering SET Secure Electronic TransactionT programs to enable and advance Internet commerce. Visa's 618 million cards, generating more than US$1 trillion in annual volume, are accepted at more than 14 million worldwide locations, including over 400,000 ATMs in the Visa Global ATM Network. Visa's Internet address is visa.com .
