G7, confident on inflation, looks for growth-Prodi
06:40 p.m May 16, 1998 Eastern
BIRMINGHAM, England, May 16 (Reuters) - Leading industrial nations are
confident that inflation is in check and are looking at ways to reduce
unemployment by spurring domestic demand, Italian Prime Minister Romano
Prodi said on Saturday.

Prodi told Reuters Television that leaders of the leading industrial
nations agreed during their annual summit that the current state of the
global economy was healthy and the long-term prospects bright.

''Therefore we can be confident about trying to achieve stronger
economic growth -- I mean we explicitly talked about stimulating
consumer demand. This means we are not afraid of inflation, and this is
what we were looking for to help employment,'' Prodi said.

In a statement issued after talks on Friday, the Group of Seven
industrial nations said conditions varied across the group. Growth had
been strong in the United States, Canada and Britain, while Japan had
unveiled a pump-priming package that leaders warmly welcomed.

In Germany, France and Italy, they said, growth had picked up momentum
but it was important that it be increasingly supported by domestic
demand, which would have a positive effect on jobs.

''Our common view on the world economy and future chances for employment
are very good. The prospects are for steady growth without inflation,''
Prodi, speaking on the second day of the three-day summit, said. -
