From a phycotherapist's point of view..I think people go to the public post as a type of exhibitionism and to enlist others into the controversy...about subjects that have NOTHING to do with thread.

If they thought they might be being tuned out....this would dampen efforts to foment dispute (off topic ones). The reason SI has threads is so people who want to read on a particular subject can do it........
Not to tune into a stock name to learn how someone's sex drive should be at various age stages or whether the size of someone's penis makes a difference.

It can become very counterproductive when the majority of posts between just a few individuals becomes perverted on the thread.

I'm not saying such posts aren't proper..ther are just more appropriate
forums for it. We need to maintain organization on SI to achieve maximim benefit from the thread.

The Ligand thread has had problems ever since a quarrel on the Amlyn thread tempted tonyt to become a frequent poster on the Ligand thread last summer.

Since then we have had frequent flame wars and much pointless discussion on the Ligand thread. We have so far not found a way to effectively deal with this problem.

Reading a filtered version of the Ligand thread without posts from or responses to tonyt would be a far less controversial and drastic solution than an outright ban of him which would probably be the only other effective solution of the Ligand threads problems.

People who want to get an impression from the discussion on the Ligand thread can find it at Subject 8060
