I have a relatively high buying power in my account currently. I am really hoping now
that I can keep the short shares!

Jan,

If the brokerage firm you have does not have enough shares, request they do a search on other firms for shares. Most are reluctant to do that search but I have requested at times and shares have been located for me. Some times it takes most of the day.

What occurs is another firm lends the shares to your firm that you have shorted. You will only be required to cover in the event the third party firm's client wishes to sell their shares. It ends up being all the same to you.
