Henry, the company I worked for (Linde div., Union Carbide, now Praxair) invented molecular sieve, a zeolite for industrial gas separation. The mechanism for a zeolite to "hold" a molecule is very complex where contained element is very small, molecular, and may even be ionic. Sometimes the containment can be equivalent to the lattice totally shielding the important element from external chemical process. The lattice of the zeolite may have to be chemically destroyed to release anything important contained. Think of it as a cage containing a precious metal ion. Chemical destruction of that structure could easily be more costly than any physical process. There's a similar difficulty in the desert sands were microfine metals are captured in silica where mechanical "working" can't grind fine enough to expose the metal to leach. You can't say Naxos extraction is cheap until someone proves it.

Dr. Groves of black helicopter fame <VBG> wrote some papers on the leaching of metals from the playa clays (zeolites).
