Bearded One,

Yeah, my comment wasn't aimed at that.

The externalities that the DOJ and everyone else is concerned about are the switching costs and self reinforcing position of owning the OS and the applications as well as being able to dictate channel policy.

This thread has beaten that particular horse to death. Its clear to any right thinking person that Microsoft has a monopoly on the PC desktop and that they abuse their position. Its also clear that Microsoft is probably the least innovative software company in the world. "Embrace and extend" means exactly what it says, it could be paraphrased as "copy or buy, add things which make it compatible with MS only products and then destroy the competition".

Part of the difficulty in discussing this is that most people, including some on this thread (won't mention any names) don't understand how computers work, are ignorant of the governments role in sponsoring a lot of the technology we take for granted, and are unwilling to see this in any kind of historical context. Which leads them to actually believe some of the PR that MS constantly churns out.
"Freedom to innovate", if only they would...

Did you read the Chomsky interview? There was a funny companion article about Linux in India. I think BG has poisoned his own well and will continue to do so; IMO this anti-MS backlash will only continue to grow until MS becomes a laughing stock. Luckily for us computing did not start with MS and it sure as hell won't end with them.
