I agree that it is hard to believe but it is true. Salt or no salt. As for installation. . . If you have ever installed a syquest drive you know that there is nothing that can do harm to them during an installation process. They are a snap to install. Especially for an experienced technician. Now customer usage might be the problem. Let's see. . . once a day, six days a week a person puts in a Syquest manufactured cartridge and runs a batch file that zips a database into a file and stores it on the cartridge. Then they eject the cartridge and put it in a safe place. Yes, now that you mention it this could be the problem. . . using the drive!

So far Syquest has not rejected any of our RMAs that were within the warranty period. This must mean that they don't believe it is a problem caused by the operator.

One very critical area of the drive is the read/write head. This must be very precise to transfer data at such a high rate and it is a very delicate part within the drive. They are a major problem in my opinion. I have seen these get bent for no reason other than inserting a cartridge. In fact I have an EZFlyer 230 parallel version that has been used a total of about 15 times by myself. About a month ago I inserted a cartridge and it made a heck of a sound. After ejecting the cartridge and looking into the drive I saw that the head had not been retracted properly and was up over the top of the guide. And when the cartridge was inserted while it was in that position the read/write head was bent. And even though the drive had little use it was 15 months old, three months out of warranty and Syquest would not touch it.

I have not looked at a Syquest 10Q or 10K and don't know if they talk about RMA costs but it might be a good question for you to get addressed. I think this is a major problem for Syquest.
