"So why is MS-Office the only thing you can get at Dell, GTW, and Micron? "

I am surprised this question is still being asked. The real strength of Microsoft on the desktop is not Windows as such but the integration of MS-Office in particular into Windows.

MS-Office has become the default choice of the corporate workplace. Because of the ease of file sharing ever since ubiquitous e-mail became part of our life, no one wants to do the extra work to convert formats. One of the initial effects of the Internet is that it has entrenched certain formats (including PDF, HTML, XML,...).

This was not the case when files were mostly shared via floppy. And, it was possible for whole organizations to standardize on different products. As we move down the path of collaborative work via the Internet, this is no longer possible and the Internet standards issue will dominate. My own wish is for the government to insist on standards in this area (as well as interfaces) and let the market take care of the rest.
