Now Microsoft and others threaten it with proprietary standards like Active-X. Microsoft is not the only one. Half a dozen sites still vie to be the gatekeepers for what you can find.

Yes, like umm...

1) Apple Computer (greedily refused to license the Apple OS to other PC OEMs)
2) Sun Microsystems insisting on retaining sole authority on Java standards.
3) HP creating their own brand of Java (just licensed it to three more clients a couple days ago).
4) MSFT tweaked Java, and promoted Active-X also.

This is all simply the marketplace at work. The government should butt out of product design efforts taking place in the free market.
