Christine:

If perfect communism could exist the ant colony would be a noble model to emulate -- but not for Man with higher abilities -- that's why communism can never succeed long-term -- it is against Man's nature.

You may long to be a drone bee, but frankly, I do not. Until and unless some alien race comes along to prove differently, Man is the supreme race on this planet. We are the Masters; we are the gods of all we survey. When we have conquered DNA and the creation of Life itself, conquered the stars and opened up doorways to actual "other realities" we will have still just begun to scratch the surface of our powers -- the power of the Mind. The child's play that so many are blinded by in this Century does little but pass the time between birth and the grave.

These issues that seem enormous are actually petty and much more easily resolved if politics were taken out of it. The morality of the tribe is an oxymoron. Individuals who subjugate their rational self-interests to the will of the mob are dupes, robots, parrots or good little ants.

There is a balance. The ant colony fails for us monkey sorts because too much community mindedness stifles individual ambition. And for better or for worse, that is the only reliable driver for innovation and the building of wealth.
Conversely, an overly individualistic society rewards strength above all else. You end up with something like a warrior society. This scales poorly beyond the tribal (or motorcycle club) scale.
Where to best strike the balance between selfishness and collectivism - that's always a great party topic!
