Matsushita Electric Ind To Sell Digital TVs In US
TOKYO (Nikkei)-Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (6752) plans to make its first foray into the U.S. market for digital televisions this summer.

With the U.S. scheduled to launch terrestrial digital broadcasting in November, Matsushita is hoping to gain the lead on its competitors.

Among the products the company plans to sell in the U.S. are three digital TVs: a 32-inch-screen model, priced at $1,800; a 36-inch model, which will sell for $3,200; and a 56-inch wide-screen projection TV, priced at under $6,000. Sales of the products, which can also receive analog signals, will begin in August.

Matsushita will also offer a digital cable set-top box capable of receiving the 18 broadcasting formats currently approved in the U.S. The receiver, which will be compatible with conventional TVs as well as the new digital sets, will hit the market in October at a price of $1,700. The company will also market a digital VHS videocassette recorder.
