<<Datalink, which promotes its ability to provide "solutions" on its Internet site, is working with Storage Technology and a storage division of Westboro, Mass.-based Data General Corp. on a national marketing effort for storage area networks.

Storage networks are fast becoming an important aspect of the data storage industry, Barrett said. In the case of Storage Technology, networking hardware sales, though small, have grown dramatically. In the company's most recent quarter, sales of the network equipment totaled $17 million, or $5 million more than Smith Barney had expected.

"This networking is become a very important part of where their future is going," Barrett said. "That's a very key issue." >>

ITEM: From Computer Network Technologies 10Q filed May 14:

<< Engineering and development expense in the first quarter of 1998 increased approximately 57% when compared to the first quarter of 1997, primarily due to costs associated with continued development of new products, including the Company's new Storage Area Networking (SAN) product family which generated $6.7 million of revenue in the 1998 first quarter, and expansion of the engineering organization due to the Internet Solutions Division acquisition.
