Jim, you said "Perhaps, these guys are counting the cost based on the difference between the price of the options when granted and the current fix on price of the stock." I think you are right. The data is presented in Dell's 10-K and the price of the shares were nowhere near the market price at the time of exercise. Dell also used put options to facilitate the purchase. Unfortunately, the accounting is so convoluted that it's difficult to tell exactly what's going on. My suggestion is to watch the cash flow statements -- it's a heck of a lot easier to follow than the equity statement.
