Good morning James,

Having just returned last night from a 4 week trip to Europe in which I meet with countless bankers, brokers, software and hardware types regarding the year 2000 problem and the Euro conversion question, I must say that the general feeling among those in the know falls directly in line with your comments. Europe is further behind in the year 2000 fix than the USA and will not be ready. Most bankers and brokers that I spoke with, when pinned down with the question, "Will this Y2k problem affect your business and if your answer is no, will your company issue an insurance policy covering any losses resulting from not being ready with a Y2k fix?"

Thier answer was that they felt that a great many businesses will be badly hurt by not having a Y2k fix in place and no they would not be in the position to issue an insurance policy.

On the Euro conversion, after reviewing and better understanding the aspects with these same people, there is little concern as current software is able to handle the change under the current rules.

I too do not intend this as a scare but only to cause us to open and not close our eyes with regard to this very real pending problem. It is real and rapidly approaching.
