thechipmerchant.com lists K6-300 at $256. The PII-300 is $381.

On top of this savings, factor in the mother board. Even if your $253 figure for the PII-300 is correct, then the $20 savings on the chip plus about $70 savings on a socket 7 vs. a slot 1 motherboard is a total savings of $90. That's about a 30% savings for equivalent performance. Sounds "much cheaper" to me.
