Ken -
*OT*
a 16 /50 means the caliber of the shell (16 inches) times 50 yields the barrel length, in this case a little over 66 feet. This gun had a muzzle velocity of 2800 FPS and a range of a little over 20 miles.
The largest gun ever constructed for US naval use was a 16 / 56 which had a muzzle velocity of 3000 FPS and range over 25 miles. The Japanese built both 18 / 48 and 18 /56 guns for their largest battleships. The 18 /56 had a range of nearly 30 miles and could penetrate 18 inch armour (so it could have penetrated the primary armour of a New Jersey class battleship like the Missouri).
The New Jersey was very effective against hardened targets in Viet Nam and saved a lot of Pilots from having to run the anti-aircraft gauntlet. Naval fire was also a lot more accurate - the New Jersey could routinely place fire within 50 yards of map coordinates from nearly 20 miles away and could correct that fire within 25 yards on the next salvo.
