E'Lane Egypt confiscates Viagra from drug stores 9.15 a.m. ET (1315 GMT) May 18, 1998 CAIRO, Egypt - Egyptian police and health ministry officials are raiding drug stores to confiscate illegally imported bottles of the impotence drug Viagra, an official said today. Egypt has imposed a ban on the drug and has ordered clinical tests, said Gamila Moussa, the deputy health minister. She said Pfizer Inc., the New York-based manufacturer of Viagra, has applied for ministry approval to sell the drug in Egypt, a process that could take some time. In the meantime, health inspectors and police have been raiding pharmacies and confiscating the drug, which has been smuggled into Egypt and has been illegally sold on the streets and in clinics. The state-owned Al-Akbar newspaper said legal action is being taken against pharmacies selling Viagra. It did not disclose the measures.
