<<OT: Disney Does Deal With Italian Telephone Company...>>

Telecom Italia, Walt Disney announce new Web site

ÿÿÿÿ MILAN, May 18 (Reuters) - U.S. entertainment company Walt Disney Co is launching its first
subscriber-supported Web site in Europe, in partnership with the Internet unit of Italian telephone
service operator Telecom Italia.
ÿÿÿÿ The move is part of the world's second-largest media company's plan to further its aggressive
expansion into cyberspace.
ÿÿÿÿ ''We are having discussions across Europe to do similar deals in other countries,'' said Chafic
Najia, vice president of Disney Online, a unit of Disney.
ÿÿÿÿ Disney Online has free-access Web sites in local languages in eight European countries, said
Najia.
ÿÿÿÿ ''We will aggressively seek to position those sites as leading kids and family sites,'' he said.
''Internet commerce is part of the outlook.''
ÿÿÿÿ The Italian phone company and Walt Disney Co will operate three Italian-language versions of
popular Disney Web sites starting today, including an Italian version of Disney's Daily Blast, a
subscription-based interactive game service.
ÿÿÿÿ Both Web sites will be initially offered to Telecom Italia Network subscribers free of charge.
Subscribers will later be charged a fee.
ÿÿÿÿ Neither company wanted to release financial details of the agreement.
ÿÿÿÿ Telecom Italia Network's Giorgio Marelli said at a news conference that the two-year agreement
with Disney is its first with a foreign content provider.
ÿÿÿÿ Telecom Italia Network, an internet access provider fully owned by Telecom Italia, is trying to
increase the amount of editorial content it provides to subscribers.
ÿÿÿÿ In addition to operating Disney.com and Disney's Daily Blast, the entertainment conglomerate
operates ABC, ESPN and other related film and television sites.
ÿÿÿÿ Its overall Internet group averages 18 million page views per day, a Disney executive said last
month, citing industry statistics.
