This "they can shift gears any time they want and turn a profit" argument has
been made by many bulls here and elsewhere and the CFO played the same card with her
recent "EBITDMA" comments.

There is a post on the Motley Fool thread that did locate the amount that was actually marketing compared to operational. I do not have the bookmark on this computer. I did not verify the numbers but Amazon would still be in the red with no advertising at all according to that post. These figures did leave out the debt service on the $530 million which would place them in the red further.

My only point was that operating expenses should be listed separately from marketing expenses and with that information we could make a better determination.

My accountant keeps the advertising and marketing expenses separate from the operating expenses in my business. I believe that is normal accounting.
