<Most people in developed countries will still want the real thing.>

Exactly. Can they call the drug made from that compound "Viagra"? Those who can afford it will want the real thing, those who can't afford the real thing won't buy Viagra in the first place (in some countries' deflated currencies, one Viagra pill equals a half month's salary of an ordinary worker). There are a lot of counterfeit Gucci handbags, Duport lighters being sold in Asia as well as in N. America. Doesn't affect Gucci/Dupont sales. What affects their sales is the Asian 'flu, which means less affluent Asians around to buy these luxury goods. From reading the various articles on LLY's fight for Prozac's patent protection in China, one gets the sense that these big pharmaceuticals acknowledge this patent infringement issue in Asia as a big problem, and they are fighting to protect their patents.

Jim,

Gene-cloned proteins (as in the Amgen case) are a different story--these are macromolecules to be cloned with highly specialized techniques.

The active principle in Viagra is a classic small molecule that could be synthesized by conventional organic chemistry principles.

HUGE difference.
