<< What role did the weak dollar (against the yen) play in the 91-95 period for the U.S semi-equip industry? >>

I'm thinking through the same scenarios now, what does the Yen @ 160 do? My view of 91-95 was while I was on a project for a Japanese company building Fabs in the US, and they pretty much only bought Japanese equipment (excepting KLA and AMAT), no matter what the exchange rates were.

In a world with the Yen getting cheaper, I think Asian companies will be hard pressed to buy probers from Electroglas instead of TEL. Daifuku beats out PRI. Nikon and Canon take out the SVGI, UTEK, etc. KLIC doesn't sell too many 8xxx bonders...

On the other hand, AMAT, KLAC, TER maybe do a little (or a lot) better because, at least the Japanese are already used to buying their equipment, and they have much less competition anyway.

I'm painting with broad strokes, but that's how I see it. And Brian's right, Briefing is primarily TA... and it's my first stop when I fire up the PC in the morning.
