I just saw Shall We Dance, and I must respectfully disagree with James, as I found it to be not in the least a Hollywood type picture. It was a marvelous character study, and I am still humming the song Shall We Dance (gosh I love Anna and the King of Siam). Some of my favorite characters were peripheral ones- and the attitude of the typical Japanese to ballroom dance (as portrayed in this movie- have no idea whether it is accurate) is hilarious. Nothing much really happens, but Mr. Sugiyama is a wonderful character- so dignified, and yet yearning for a little happiness- I really cared what happened to him, and I thought the ending walked a delicate balance between reality and fantasy.
