THREAD ---Sounds like CPQ will keep ALTA VISTA for a while--Technology News

Competition Splits AltaVista And Yahoo
(05/18/98; 3:18 p.m. EST)
By Andrew Craig, TechWeb
Digital Equipment's AltaVista has been replaced as the search engine technology provider for the Yahoo Internet directory because the two companies have become rival website operators.

Yahoo said Monday that AltaVista will be replaced by Inktomi as the search engine behind the Yahoo Internet directory when its contract expires in July.

Inktomi, based in San Mateo, Calif., said Monday its technology will be in operation on the Yahoo website within 90 days. Financial details of the agreement will not be made public, according to Ed Gordon, general manager of Inktomi Europe.

First awarded the contract in June 1996, Maynard, Mass.-based Digital said its strategy had changed in the past two years from being a search engine technology provider to being a successful website operator. As a result, Digital and Yahoo are now competitors, said Don Bradley, communications manager at AltaVista, based in Campbell, Calif.

Digital started selling advertising on the AltaVista site about a year ago, said Bradley. "In the beginning, there was not much conflict, but [it changed] as the business grew stronger and revenue increased," he said.

Digital will now concentrate on selling advertising on its AltaVista website and adding more areas of content, Bradley said, including a personal finance management service expected to be launched later this week.

Inktomi's technology is used by a number of other Internet companies, including the HotBot search engine run by Wired Ventures, the Microsoft Network, and Cnet. But Inktomi will not be providing technology for competing websites, Gordon said.

BEST WISHES
BILL

Personally I believe that CPQ will stage a bit of a mid-summer rally...perhaps as strong as to the mid/upper 30s.. maybe a touch at 40. I too am a bit surprised at the Jul 40 calls.. seems a bit high of a strike. But, once the DEC deal solidifies, this may be enough to give CPQ a kick. For now, I'm playing short-term conservative with strangles/straddles.. but will soon be looking at longer term calls if things start solidly turning in the next few weeks. Lots of market factors in the mix however, making it difficult to read at this time.

For now, I'm looking for "singles" here and there just collecting a few bucks no matter which way we go.. and putting the strong portfolio growth on hold a bit. By the way, pretty much all I trade is CPQ and DEC in my trading portfolio. These are both fun companies to watch and I have a strong professional interest in them as I am an IS manager of a large DEC shop with some Compaq thrown in. In addition, I trade only options at this time.. this 2-company focused approach has worked pretty good so far...

Regards,
Mike
