Alex:

Your analogy fails in one major respect. If the Easter Islanders had created a society based more on the philosophy and grasp of reality of Aristotle, they would not have tended to lean so heavily toward mysticism. They then could have built a higher technology, a higher society, redefined the original mode of travel their ancestors used to get to the island in the first place, created motive steam power, built steamships, sailed in force to South America. Conquered new lands and overpowered the Conquistadores, created the United States of South America and become one of the great economic powers of the world. Too bad they concentrated so much time and energy on mystical gods.
