Post says firm linked to Russian mob, drug dealing and prostitution

YBM Magnex International Inc YBMShares issued 442229011998-05-13 close $14.35Wednesday May 20 1998The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, May 20, 1998, edition that Russian mobsters used Canada's stock exchanges to legitimize the proceeds of arms dealing, drug trafficking and prostitution, according to a secret British police report on a Russian organized crime boss with links to YBM Magnex International. The Post's Sandra Rubin writes that questions mounted yesterday about how much Canadian securities officials knew about YBM before allowing investors to pour their money into it. A confidential report by Britain's National Crime Squad said Russian godfather Semion Moguilevitch was using a Canadian listing to legitimize the proceeds of crime. Mr. Moguilevitch, 51, was a director and major shareholder of Arigon, a Channel Islands company that was rolled into YBM in 1995. The secret British investigation concluded that Mr. Moguilevitch was transferring funds from Britain to Hungary, from there to the United States and then on to Canada. The Post says law enforcement officials new of Mr. Moguilevitch's links to YBM before it was listed on the T.S.E. in May 1996. (c) Copyright 1998 Canjex Publishing Ltd. canada-stockwatch.com
