Dwight, you are quite right.

This was a battle between MSFT and NSCP that was covered in the early days on this thread and the NSCP vs. MSFT thread.

NSCP stated that it would defeat MSFT, make it obsolescent by taking the NSCP browser and adding operating system functionality to it. Well quite apart from MSFT; SUNW, IBM, and ORACLE did not like this, as it threatened their own views of the future of computing. Needless to say, its easier to create a browser than an operating system and poor little NSCP is getting beat fair and square.

At the same time while barking at the heels of MSFT it completely misplayed the portal/onramp aspects of the net. NSCP should be what YAHOO is today; NSCP had 80-90+% of all web surfers starting from its homepage just a few years ago. Now it is trying to make agreements with other search engines and play catch up. NSCP will be a mere footnote in internet history. Not because of MSFT but because of its own arrogance and short sightedness.

This is an excellent distinction to make. Can you tell me what is not a Utilitarian function? If that can be determined you might be able to get MSFT to agree to it and draw a line in the sand.

I think MSFT believes all functions can be put into the OS, Word Processing, Drawing, Spreadsheets, etc.

What will stop them from adding everything? I draw the line this way, I can run a computer without a browser, but I can't run it without the I/O and memory mgt functions of the OS.

Thanks,
bps
