WHEN TO SELL A STOCK!!

Now that ZTEC got #5000, I'd like to pass on some highlights from an excellent article in Fidelity Focus by Joe Valenza, Fidelity's vice president of Equity Trading Services. It is his view of when to sell a stock:

1. YOUR stock has hit a specific target price
2. YOU no longer agree with the company's corporate strategy
3. The company fails to meet earnings expectations
4. The company's stock price has soared in a relatively short time
(ask yourself, "Would I invest in the company today at its current value?")
5. The industry in which the company operates is deteriorating
6. Competition is heating up
7. Unexpected events
8. Significant management changes
9. Major changes on the balance sheet
10. The company's market valuation is no longer attractive
11. Your investment goals change

I think this is an excellent litmus test. Finally, there is at least one more viable reason for selling a stock, one that M. Simone shared with us today:

12. "My brother got out today because his wife couldn't stand his obsession with PNLK." (this one hits a little too close to home!)

Husbands and all men everywhere, TAKE NOTE of #12!!!

Cheers,

George
