WDC is in trouble and losing shareholders faith and respect, too. I think this quote from the site you picked up is very telling of why this announcement needed to be played up at WDC:

"We told you last October we were going to change the game! I think with today's announcement, it's fair to say we're changing the playing field big time!"

Anyone wonder about how IBM feels about Dr. Re leaving Big Blue? Is it possible they are upset and can use the media to get at that feeling?

Neither of the two above thoughts are facts, but they make sense to me in the contexts of what we have seen in the last few weeks.

Doesn't Microsoft have attorneys?

The details of WDC's and IBM's agreement have not been finalized, i would bet that the news release to which you refer was drafted by marketing types, not attorneys
